Green off the mark

BARNT Green CC skipper Dougie Brown praised his side's discipline after they got their Birmingham and District Premier League season off to a winning start with victory over Shifnal.

It was a mixed weekend for Green, who moved straight to the Birmingham League's summit on Saturday evening, before suffering an agonising one-run defeat to Water Orton in the Cockspur National Knockout Cup on Sunday.

But Brown, who led the charge on Saturday with bowling figures of 5-20, believes they are already showing signs of improvement on last season.

Opening batsmen Richard Hall also played his part in the victory, hitting 75.

Brown said: "Games like that last year we didn't win, but we did enough to see it through.

"It was always going to be a low scoring game, there was plenty in the pitch for the bowlers.

"187 was always going to be a score that would be difficult to get, if we bowled well.

"It was a good wicket to bowl on but we still had to make sure we bowled well."

Green hope to have Dai Williams and Phil Mann available for Saturday's trip to Kenilworth Wardens, but spinner Richard Illingworth will miss the game.

In Division One, Bromsgrove put their first points on the board, holding on for a losing draw at Dorridge.

The highlight of their clash was a magnificent century from opener Omar Ali.
