A BROMSGROVE pub has won its appeal for an outdoor seating area allowing drinking in the High Street's alcohol free zone.

The Slug and Lettuce has been given the green light by the government's planning inspector for their proposals which were rejected by Bromsgrove District Council's planning committee last September.

The inspector considered whether customers drinking alcohol in the seating area would be breaching the alcohol free zone covering the High Street. It was found that the pub holds a premises licence which makes them exempt from the requirements of the council's public order during trading hours.

The planning committee originally rejected the application on the grounds of community safety, following police recommendations.

In making the decision, the inspector took into account that CCTV monitors the front of the building and the company is responsible for encouraging sensible drinking.

The inspector also noted there was ample space within the High Street for the area and that the view of the listed building would not be compromised.

The decision makes the pub the first in the High Street to be granted a cafe culture' style area.

Rebecca Whiley, manager of the Slug and Lettuce, said: "It is not a new thing. People enjoy the continental style. It is quite popular, can liven up a High Street, and provide a great atmosphere."

She added discussions were taking place this week on when a new retractable canopy and seating area will be introduced.
