Seven day challenge

A SEVEN day fundraising marathon to support soldiers will be passing through Rubery and Catshill tomorrow (Thursday, Augsut 21).

Ex-soldier and Romsley resident Phil McDermott is a member of the seven man team which is trying to complete seven marathons in seven days.

The march, which began last Sunday in Cirencester and is set to finish in the Gloucestershire market town this Saturday, takes in Bournemouth, Bath and Weston-Super-Mare. Tonight (Wednesday) the team members, including former and serving soldiers, are set to appear at Wembley Stadium to complete a lap of the stadium prior to the England verses Czech Republic match.

The Birmingham leg of the challenge, which the team has been doing in full army kit weighing 30lb, takes place tomorrow (Thursday) starting at the military wing of the Selly Oak Hospital, moving onto Rubery and its British Legion, at around 4pm. The march is set to finish at the Crown Inn, in Stourbridge Road, Catshill, at around 5.30pm.

Phil, who featured in the Advertiser/Messenger last January after his Broad Street-based company Worcestershire Medal Service gained a royal warrant to produce medals for the queen, said they were aiming to raise £50,000 from the challenge.

Money raised is to be donated to the Army Benevolent Fund, which provides financial and practical support to soldiers and their families.

Collectors will be out on the streets as the group march by, but you can also support the group by donating on the charity website, www.justgiving.com/triple7
