Town residents invited to support Bromsgrove church's restoration

BROMSGROVE residents are being invited to a flower festival which is raising funds for the restoration of a town church.

Fundraisers from St Peter’s Catholic Church, on Rock HIll, are appealing to people to support the event as they continue their efforts to raise £150,000.

The church, over 150-years-old, is badly in need of repair as the ravages of time has left its sandstone fabric exterior crumbling.

The church has an illustrious history, Sir Edward Elgar regular worshipped at the church and Mabel Tolkien, mother of the author JRR Tolkien, is buried in the Church’s graveyard.

Jeanne Chadwich, one of the church’s parishioners who is helping to raise money for the church’s restoration, said: “The festival is a good opportunity for people to come and see our beautiful church and its historic features.”

She said the amount raised so far was £40,000, raised through garden parties, dances, fetes and a table top sale.

At the festival, being held on Saturday, July 25, and Sunday, July 26, from 2pm to 5pm both days, flower arrangements will be on display around the church and its grounds. Visitors will be asked to vote for their favourite arrangement, the winner receiving a prize.

There will be a small admission cost, and a sale of donated plants and flowers. There is still the chance to enter a floral arrangement, contact Mairi Weston on 01527 836797 or Penny Newman, 01527 833825. The last date for entries is July 12.
