A BROMSGROVE man suffered slash wounds to his face and one of his hands after being attacked in the town.
Police are investigating the incident which happened in Foxwalks Avenue, in Rockhill, between midnight and 1am on Wednesday, July 1.
A man in his 20s and another in his 50s were walking back after celebrating the elder man’s birthday.
Two men in a white, Ford Transit-style van with black front bumper pulled up alongside them and started abusing them, which led to a verbal confrontation.
Both of the men in the van got out and the driver then attacked the younger man, punching him to the floor. As he got up he fended off another blow. He then realised his hand and face had been cut with a sharp instrument, which police say could be a knife.
The offenders got back in the van and drove off into Alderley Road, which leads into Breakback Road.
The victim went to Alexandra Hospital, Redditch, where surgery was carried out on a deep cut to his hand and a cut above one of his eyes. The man he was with also went to hospital, suffering from shock.
Police have carried out house-to-house inquiries in the area following the incident.
The offenders are both white, around 6ft, in their 30s, and wore dark clothing. One of them had short fair hair and the other short dark hair.
Detective Constable Nadia Prescott said: “This was a terrible end to a birthday night out and an unprovoked attack which could have resulted in far worst injuries had the victim not managed to get his hand up to protect himself.
“As it is he may never regain full use of one of his thumbs due to nerve damage.
“It is imperative we trace the men involved in this attack and I would urge anyone who saw the incident or the offenders and their van either before or afterwards to get in touch with us straight away.”
Witnesses, or anyone with information, are asked to call police on 0300 333 3000 or ring crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
