COSTUMES worn on screen and stage by stars ranging from Johnny Depp and Keira Knightly to Richard Burton and Helen Mirren have gone on show at Worcester Cathedral.

The Starstruck exhibition, which runs until Sunday, September 6, brings together more than 80 outfits featured in movie blockbusters, RSC productions and on television.

Pirates of the Caribbean costumes feature alongside clothes worn by David Tennant in Love’s Labours Lost at Stratford, Jonas Armstrong and Keith Allen in TV’s Robin Hood and Meryl Streep in The French Lieutenant’s Woman and Out of Africa.

Some featured in Oscar and BAFTA winning productions and the exhibition gives visitors a chance to view them close up, against the impressive internal architecture of the Cathedral.

Dean of Worcester, Peter Atkinson, said: “It’s a truly majestic backdrop for these beautiful costumes.”

Wyre Forest Lacemakers have contributed to the exhibition, with a display of their lace cakes on show in a royal section that includes one of the outfits worn by Helen Mirren in the film The Queen, which earned her an Oscar for best actress.

Particularly striking is the red carpet catwalk, running along the Cathedral Nave, that features stunning dresses worn by actresses like Kate Beckinsale, Natalie Portman and Demi Moore.

More poignantly, there are costumes that were worn by the late Heath Ledger and Natasha Richardson.

For the romantics, there is a section showcasing wedding dresses that will be familiar from productions such as the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice.

There is a charge for admission to the exhibition, which is being staged with the aim of raising money for the Cathedral, its mission and outreach.

Opening times for Starstruck are Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, with last entry at 4pm and 12.30pm to 3.30pm on Sundays. The exhibition will be closed this Saturday, August 22.
