Council project in line for BBC award

A BROMSGROVE District Council sports project is in line to scoop a top prize in a BBC competition.

The ‘Keep on Moving’ project, for people with disabilities, is competing for the BBC Midlands Power of Sport Award.

The award is made to a sports project or initiative that is making a real impact, and involving the local community.

The project gives people with disabilities the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of sports and activities.

It caters for all types of disability, with participants having physical, learning and sensory impairments. It focuses on what participants can do, whilst supporting them when they struggle.

Amongst the activities included in the project are community swim sessions, a club for the paralympic sport of Boccia at Chadsgrove School and Specialist Sports College, and a multi sport club and dance classes at the Dolphin Centre.

As a result of the ‘Keep on Moving’ project, the multi sport club is one of the first in Worcestershire to achieve the new clubmark accreditation from the English Federation of Disability Sport, while the Boccia Boars club is Worcestershire’s first to enter the National Disability Boccia League.

A BBC camera crew have been filming the project in action, and the footage will be shown at an awards evening being held at the Mailbox, in Birmingham, on Wednesday, December 1.

Councillor Margaret Sherrey, portfolio holder for the elderly and vulnerable, said: “Getting through to the finals of this award shows us that the project is having a real effect in the community. This is due in no small part to the hard work of all the coaches and participants.

“The recognition of reaching the final means that, whatever the result, people living with disabilities across Bromsgrove can take encouragement from their council working to improve opportunities on their behalf.”
