Martial arts academy in Cofton Hackett opens

A NEW martial arts academy based in Cofton Hackett has been opened.

Fifty-year-old Chris Mooney, a 6th Dan Shihan and leading figure in martial arts training, has opened his new El Mei Kan school, at the Gospel Hall, in Barnt Green Road, Cofton Hackett.

The school practices traditional Aikikai-style Aikido, a Japanese martial art.

Mr Mooney has signed a lease to rent the building from Cofton Hackett Parish Council and business property consultants, John Truslove, have helped to get him an initial rent free period, from the parish council.

Mr Mooney said the project involved Cofton Hackett residents, including 30 students who helped to get the project off the ground financially.

He said: “We have spent several months working hard to gut the interior and now have a facility that is second to none in this country, dedicated to many of the various forms of oriental discipline including Aikido, sword drawing, meditation and calligraphy.”
