Windscreen smashed on motorway near Bromsgrove

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man had the windscreen of his car smashed as he drove along the M5 motorway last weekend.

Between 2-2.20pm on Saturday, March 13, the man, who is in his 60s, was driving in the fast lane of the M5, between Junction 4 of the M5 and junction 1 of the M42 near Bromsgrove, when an object was in collision with the car windscreen, causing it to smash.

Pc Vicky Collier from Bromsgrove police said: “Fortunately no one was injured during this incident but it had the potential to be far more serious than it was, especially as the driver reported feeling an incredible impact as the object collided with the car.

“We understand that a group of two or three youths aged between 10-14 years old were stood on the bridge over the motorway, in Fockbury Mill Lane in Dodford, at around the time of the incident and that one of them may have thrown an object from the bridge down to the motorway below.

“We know this area is popular with walkers and we’re appealing to anyone who was in the Dodford area and either witnessed the incident or recalls seeing this group near the bridge to give us a call.

“We’d also like to hear from any other motorists who used this stretch of the M5 shortly after 2pm on Saturday, March 13 and saw anything that may be relevant to our enquiries.”

Police are also encouraging parents to discuss this incident with their children, highlighting to them how dangerous throwing rocks and others objects from bridges at passing vehicles can be.

Recognising that a moment’s distraction for a driver, especially on a busy motorway, could easily result in injury or even loss of life, police treat such incidents extremely seriously.

Anyone with information is asked to call Bromsgrove police on 0300 333 3000 (quoting incident 157-N-130310) or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
