THE first Bromsgrove Summer School, where students learned more about the history of the town, has proved popular.

The new course was held between July 19 and 21 at the former home of Bromsgrove poet AE Housman, Housman Hall, which is now part of Bromsgrove School.

More than 70 students enrolled for six courses including Bromsgrove in the Industrial Revolution, Churches and Chapels in Worcestershire and the town, and the Housmans.

Among the speakers were Chris Dyer, emeritus professor of local history at Leicester University and Alan Petford, a lecturer in local history at the university who has ancestry in the Bromsgrove area.

Other contributions came from Jennie McGregor-Smith, author of several architectural and historical works on Bromsgrove, Jenny Townshend, editor of the Bromsgrove Society's Rousler, and Julian Hunt, summer school organiser.

Bromsgrove's MP Sajid Javid attended on July 21 to hear a talk from Jeremy Bourne, a former master at Bromsgrove School, on the life and works of AE Housman.

After the success of the school this year, the Bromsgrove Society is already planning to hold another in July 2012.
