STREET pastors, working through St John’s Church in Bromsgrove, are set to patrol the streets of Bromsgrove every Friday evening from 10pm to 4am, in a bid to try and make sure people get home safely.

Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid attended the launch of the scheme.

He said: "Street Pastors operate in several different parts of the country providing a valuable service to the community.

"I was delighted to attend the launch of the Bromsgrove Street Pastors. The people of Bromsgrove will benefit from their contribution.

"I would like to congratulate all those behind this initiative and pay tribute to the volunteers who will be giving up their time to selflessly serve our community."

The scheme is part of an inter-denominational church response to urban problems launched in 2003 in London. It involves volunteers making an attempt to engage with people on the streets to care, listen and create a dialogue. There are currently approximately 9,000 trained volunteers working on the scheme around the UK.
