THE running of a Bromsgrove leisure centre has been taken over by a trust following an official handover.

The Ryland Centre, in New Road, provides sporting facilities for youngsters, and facilities for the wider community that meet accessibility standards for disabled people.

The Worcestershire County Council-owned venue has been looking for ways to make the centre self-sustaining.

A tender process, inviting social enterprises to apply to run the centre, was launched and Sandwell Leisure Trust (SLT) was picked from the candidates.

SLT already manages sport and leisure activities in the Black Country, and has won awards.

Last Saturday, (September 1), SLT took on the responsibility for the centre after it was officially handed over by the county council.

Councillor Liz Eyre, the county council’s lead cabinet member for children's services, said: "The handover of the Ryland Centre will see an important community asset transfer to a trust which is best suited to manage, organise and provide for the future of the centre.”

Worcestershire County Council say as a result of the transfer to SLT, it will save £100,000 - the annual maintenance cost of the facility.
