Something to crow about at Belbroughton festival

THOUSANDS are expected to again flock to Belbroughton Scarecrow Festival being held this weekend (September 29-30).

Now in its 15th year, the theme for this year’s event is 2012, celebrating the unforgettable summer of sport and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The streets of the picturesque village will be filled with quirky wurzel versions of Her Majesty and Team GB Olympic and Paralympic heroes.

Villagers will be showing off their imaginative straw-stuffed creations hanging them off lamp posts, street benches, in their gardens and on the village green.

Last year nearly 100 straw characters appeared in the village for the festival, which was attended by more than 20,000 scarecrow fans.

Festival organisers are confident for similar numbers this year.

The festival includes a steam train, farmers market, craft fair, birds of prey, and classic cars.

Animal lovers will enjoy seeing farm animals, and reptiles from Dudley Zoo.

Belbroughton Primary School will have children’s inflatables, face painting, an air ambulance pod, falconry displays, a BBQ, and a drinks tent.

In Holy Trinity Church, bell ringers will be demonstrating how to chime a church bell and visitors can climb the 69 steps to the top to enjoy the view.

The church will also host an exhibition by Hagley Art Club, floral displays and music workshops, plus a special scarecrow praise service.

Admission costs £3 for adults, £2 for senior citizens and £1 for children, aged between five and 14.

A family ticket for two adults and up to three children under five, costs £6.

Car parking is free with plenty of space being made available.

Event spokesman Annette Adey said: “There really is something for everyone to enjoy and we are looking forward to welcoming all our visitors.”

All proceeds from the event goes to local charities.
