Bromsgrove teenager gains apprenticeship after winning competition

A BROMSGROVE teenager has gained an apprenticeship after winning a regional construction competition.

In July, the Advertiser reported on North Bromsgrove High School pupil Tom Knock winning the Brick Skills competition organised by Washford Heath Technology College and BAM Construction.

The 16-year-old overcame rivals from the technology college, his school and Castle Vale Performing Arts College.

Tom impressed so much he has now enrolled on to a brick-laying apprenticeship scheme, offered to him by Stourbridge College.

On the course, where he will be employed by BAM, he will gain practical experience with local company ME Watkins Brickwork Contractor, and will spend one day a week in the company’s construction unit in Bromsgrove.

Tom said: “It was an enjoyable competition and it made us use our skills.
“I’m really looking forward to using my skills for a contractor.”

Phil Eaves, BAM’s education co-ordinator for the Midlands, said: “Tom’s enthusiasm and ability shone through.

“The success of the challenge means we can repeat it on a bigger scale next year.”
