Information on hand for World Mental Health Day
4:10pm Tuesday 16th October 2012 in News
BROMSGROVE Library played host to a series of workshops to mark World Mental Health Day on Wednesday, October 10.
The event was organised through the Lounge Community Café in Alvechurch, and the library, and was hosted by a local independent occupational therapist, Tracy Winchester.
Members of the public were given the chance to find out more about mental health issues, as well as opportunities for open discussion, and ways of fighting the stigma associated with some mental health concerns in society.
Tracy Winchester, said: “The events have been well attended and each person seeking assistance or advice had a completely unique circumstance. I was able to offer some information, signpost them to other relevant services where appropriate but ultimately, I was able to offer them my time to listen which seemed invaluable in itself to those I spoke to.”
Health issues discussed on the day included dementia, and caring for other people with mental health conditions, as well as the role of medication, and various forms of depression.
Ms Winchester added: “Depression certainly is a more common issue for people; it can affect all areas of society, it is not selective over age, sexuality, gender, race or any other factor. However, people still find it difficult to talk about, and even harder to get help.”
Similar sessions are being organised for upcoming Occupational Therapy Week, from November 5-11.
