A RECORD amount of mail was delivered in Bromsgrove in the period December 23 to Boxing Day. People posting later than usual and fog conspired to make life difficult for postal workers. Such was the high volume of mail that horse power was brought in to supplement the motor van and handcarts were used in the town centre to cope with an increase in parcel mail. Some postmen were staggering out of the sorting office with over a hundredweight of mail in their bags. Their busiest delivery however, was on Christmas morning. But before setting off on their rounds, 31 members of staff were treated to refreshments courtesy of the owners of the Coffee House in High Street.

THE traditional holiday fixture between Bromsgrove Rovers and Redditch was played before a crowd of some 2,000 at Well Lane. A large number of Redditch fans travelled to Bromsgrove by rail, cycle and other conveyances to support their team and see it achieve a long desired win by two goals to one against the old enemy away from home. At half time a collection was made for the mother of Stallard, the Rovers' player who recently died of lockjaw. It amounted to £3/5/0.

THE headteachers of schools in Bromsgrove and elsewhere in the county, numbering some 40 altogether, met in Worcester to discuss how to implement the new act, which required pupils to undergo a medical examination. The cost to county ratepayers would be £2,000 a year. However, it was unclear who would foot the bills to treat those found to be in need of treatment.
