THE recently completed £160,000 makeover and pedestrianisation of Bromsgrove High Street appeared to have been a success. Traders reported a sharp upturn in Christmas trade. Fine Fare and Tesco supermarkets both reported having done brisk business, as had Currys whose top seller had been video games.

WARM tributes were paid to John Bryant, who had retired as chairman of the Bromsgrove bench, a position he had occupied since 1969. He had been a magistrate for 30 years. John Pugh, on behalf of the Bromsgrove solicitors, praised the way he had administered justice in the town.

SCHOOLS in Bromsgrove, Frankley and Hagley were to get floodlights installed in a bid to combat vandalism and theft. More sturdy locks on doors and windows would also be fitted. It was estimated that the work at each school would cost £1,000 and was necessary as insurers were becoming increasingly cautious about providing cover.
