RETIRED school teacher Eric Drury stepped down from the Bromsgrove magistrates' bench after 18 years. Looking back on his term he said: "Only a sadist would enjoy administering punishment, but someone has to do it."

A WOODEN climbing frame, situated just a few feet below overhead high voltage electricity cables on Finstall recreation ground, was moved on the orders of Stoke Prior parish council. Notices would also be posted warning youngster about the dangers of flying kites.

EMERGENCY talks were being held in Bromsgrove to stop the town becoming high and dry as a result of a national strike planned by water workers. They were demanding a 15 per cent pay rise. However, every effort would be made to maintain services to householders. Union chief Geoff Drain, who represented 30,000 engineers, was confident of success if the strike went ahead as he had the backing of manual workers.
