50 Years Ago, February 15, 1958

BROMSGROVE'S annual Brewster (licensing) Sessions were held at the town's police court. It was revealed that last year there had been 12 convictions for drunkenness and one for drink driving. Two 18-year-olds had been convicted of purchasing drink for people under age. All those convicted had been men. Bromsgrove, with a population of 42,715, had 64 licensed premises, which equated on average to one establishment for every 667 inhabitants.

PARKING fees occupied the minds of Bromsgrove Urban District councillors at their February meeting. They agreed to suspend charging fees for the most under used car parks at Market Street, Mill Lane and Church Street for a 12 month trial period. Figures showed a deficit of £8/10/6 on those parks which were manned. Councillor Davenport told the meeting that he believed the 3d parking fee imposed by the council was helping to drive trade away from the town.

THE way refuse was collected in the urban area of Bromsgrove was to be examined by the council. The present fortnightly collections were said to be inadequate and unhygienic. A trial scheme, to be run at Charford, was being considered whereby tenants themselves would have to put their own bins at the kerbside ready for collection on a certain day and take them back after emptying. The current practice of binmen emptying bins into a large galvanised bath at the rear of homes and carrying it to the dustcart was likely to be scrapped again for the sake of hygiene.
