TWENTY firemen battled for hours to contain an early morning blaze which swept through the Dog and Pheasant pub in Worcester Road, Bromsgrove. Traffic was diverted from the town centre at the height of the blaze. The bar was extensively damaged, but prompt action by firemen save the rest of the building. Last July the pub had undergone a £70,000 refurbishment.

SECURITY was to be tightened after it was revealed that £15,000 worth of items had been stolen from hospitals in Bromsgrove and elsewhere across the county. TVs, music centres, linen and medic equipment were the main items to go missing, which was putting an additional strain on the hard pressed NHS.

PROFITS from Bromsgrove's own lottery scheme were being put to good use by local deserving organisations. Belbroughton History Society had received £1,000 to help pay for its village photographic library. And Bromsgrove Operatic Society got the same amount to help it stage its autumn production of Merrie England. The lottery was a joint venture between Bromsgrove and Wyre Forest District Councils and since its inception in 1979 had given out grants totalling £36,000.
