11:24am Thursday 7th February 2008
Shirley, our president, opened the January meeting by wishing everyone a very happy and healthy New Year. Maggie read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved and signed. Shirley said she felt the Christmas party had been a real success. She thanked members of her committee for both their hard work during the evening and their donation of raffle prizes.
She expressed her delight at the standard and range of food so generously contributed by the members. Everyone present agreed it really had been a super evening. All members were saddened to hear the loss of one of our longest serving members, Norah Byng, who has died at the age of 94. Norah had served on the committee for a number of years, including being our president. We shall miss her!
There will be a trivia quiz on February 25 and the annual dinner will be held on February 26 at the Bromsgrove Golf Club.
Our speaker for the evening, Vince Williams, ably assisted by John, gave a fascinating talk and slide-show entitled Idle Women recounting the vital and hard-working role of the women; most of whom were from well-to-do families, who served on narrowboats on our inland waterways during World War Two. Carol thanked Vince and John for a very interesting and informative talk. The next meeting is on Wednesday, February 13. Alan Thornton will speak on a Day in the Life of a Seaside Hotelier. The contest is for an amusing seaside postcard.
QUEENIE, a rather big fat pig, has had her bacon saved by a Bromsgrove animal sanctuary.
THIS November could be the last that Remembrance Day is marked in Bromsgrove in the time honoured and moving way – unless the town's British Legion can persuade new young recruits to join its ranks.
A POPULAR High Street store has become the latest victim of the current credit crunch.
THREE wards at Bromsgrove’s Princess of Wales Community Hospital have been closed after an outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting.
