POLICE were hunting three men who held up Michael Gaffney, the landlord of the Hundred House pub in Sidemoor, as he was walking to Bromsgrove to bank the takings contained in a hold all. As he approached Parkside School, a man leapt out of a parked car demanding he hand over the bag while an accomplice pointed a12 bore shotgun at him from a rear window. The four-door Morris Marina then sped off. This was the third cash snatch in the town in the last two months.
BROMSGROVE was bottom of the league in the county for the provision of NHS homes for the elderly. Town GPs described it as a scandal'. They said there were places for just 51 and this put an intolerable burden on relatives and carers.
FIRE gutted the 19th century four-storey former flour mill in Shaw Lane, Stoke Prior, Bromsgrove. The building had been used by Clements Bros (Displays) of Kidderminster Road for storage purposes. Twenty firemen from Bromsgrove and elsewhere in the area battled for hours to bring the blaze under control. A nearby brook was dammed to provide extra water during the operation. The only casualty was fireman Jim Richards. He suffered a broken thumb, a chipped wrist bone and bruising when a high pressure hose broke free from the engine and whiplashed him across the face.
