THE gales which hit Bromsgrove at the weekend and again on Monday left a trail of destruction in their wake. Many trees were blown down and tiles, slates and chimney pots ripped off scores of homes. The Forest Hotel, Lickey End, had a large window blow in and John Adams had a lucky escape while walking near Dyers' Bridge in Worcester Road. Believing a loud noise to be thunder he paused just as two large trees crashed to the ground either side of him. To add to townsfolk's misery an inch of snow fell on Friday.
GAMBLING for cash was considered a very serious crime, but doing it on a Sunday made matters worse as three Droitwich men found when they appeared at the Spa's petty sessions. John Loynes, from Witton, James Slater, of Miller Street, and Sidney Hemming, of Covercroft, had been found playing pitch and toss for money in a field between Newtown Road and Witton. The bench took a dim view of their activities and fined each one 2/6 with 4/- costs.
THE flu epidemic in Bromsgrove was making public life in the town difficult. A shortage of magistrates through the illness meant that the police court had to delay its start and the guardians' business at the workhouse was severely curtailed. And the rural district council meeting was abandoned when a quorum of councillors could not be mustered.
