WHILE much of Britain shivered or was flooded, Bromsgrove town had escaped the worst of the late winter weather. The sheltered centre had but a few inches of snow, but outlying villages - such as Lickey, Clent, Fairfield and Fockbury - where snow ploughs were brought in, had drifts of up to six feet deep. This was Bromsgrove's third snowfall since January.
A LARGE congregation gathered at St Godwald's Church, Finstall, for its second annual industrial service attended by the Bishop of Worcester. Many people involved in rail transport were among the worshippers and a letter from the chairman of British Rail was read out by the vicar, the Rev Dicker. A model steam engine and various tools made at Newton Works in the parish, were on display in the church.
VANDA Clifford, from Jubilee Terrace, Stoke Works, carried out an heroic rescue when, during a snowstorm, she dived into the icy canal near her home to rescue 15-year-old Kathleen Hill. The pair, both employed at the Stoke Prior brushworks, had been walking along the towpath to work when Kathleen, from Sagebury Terrace, slipped and fell unconscious and face down into the canal. Fortunately Vanda was a championship swimmer and swiftly pulled her to the bank. Mr Clifford, the brushwork's secretary who happened to be passing. hauled Kathleen to safety. Neither Vanda, who was secretary to Mr LG Harris, nor Kathleen were hurt.
