100 Years Ago, March 7, 1908

FIVE stolen snared rabbits turned out to be expensive meals for Albert Smith, aged 19, of Tower Hill, and James Shelley, 13, of Hanbury Terrace, Droitwich, when they appeared before the Spa Petty Sessions. The pair were accused of taking the coneys from wires set on Mr Gibbs' field in Hadzor Lane. The pair had been arrested after police had followed their footprints in the snow to a farm where evidence of the theft was found. Under the new First Offenders' Act the bench showed them leniency and let them off with payment of 18/- costs.

THE cold, wet, wintry and windy weather of late had proved to be a headache for farmers and growers in the Bromsgrove and Droitwich areas who were desperate to catch up on their spring sowing operations. The cold especially had not been good for fruit crops, large acreages of which were grown in the two districts. One good thing to come from the bad weather was the £4/18/2 proceeds from the few coppers charged to skaters to use the frozen pool at Grafton Manor. The cash was donated to Bromsgrove Cottage Hospital.
