Creating the mood of a busy classroom

MEADOWS First School in Bromsgrove was in the news recently when former pupils were invited back to have a last look around before it closes and moves to new premises nearby.

This photo, dating from about 1947, when it was known as Stourbridge Road School, shows a class of infants and girls being taught in what was the prefabricated dining hall.

The picture is not as it seems.

It was a 'posed' photo taken by a travelling photographer who chose the children he wanted to appear in it. The headteacher, Miss Gardener, is seen on the right at the back facing the camera. Teacher Mrs Tomlinson is the dark-clothed figure seen in the centre back and facing Miss Gardener.

Among a handful of pupils named are Christine Knight, Ann Gurney, Carol Buckley and Pat Fox.
