RICHARD Pearse, the landlord of the Black Cross pub in Bromsgrove, appeared before magistrates at the town's police court charged with selling gin 11 per cent below the legal strength. The case had been brought by police who called on a Mrs Rose, who after giving her a bottle, asked her to pose as a genuine customer and purchase a half pint of gin for 1/-. It was taken away for analysis and found to be under strength. In his defence Pearse said it could have come about as a result of the gin cask it was stored in having been opened on the stoop for over a year. He was fined £1 with £1/12/0 costs.

THE circus was coming to town. The Messenger carried an advance notice that Lord John Sanger's circus was to visit Bromsgrove and Droitwich. Among a host of attractions it would feature Dick Turpin's ride to York and the death of Bonnie Black Bess 'on a scale never attempted before.' Also high on the bill was 'Cyclo' the Human Enigma who it was said had loins of steel. His act was to have a fully laden 40hp car drive over his body.

FAIRFIELD'S five year old village hall could close unless villagers rallied round to support it and shoulder some of the responsibility of running it. An indication of the apathy towards the hall was highlighted by the fact not all the committee turned up.
