Sold below-strength gin

100 Years Ago - March 14, 1908.

RICHARD Pearse, the landlord of the Black Cross pub in Bromsgrove, appeared before magistrates at the town's police court charged with selling gin 11 per cent below the legal strength. The case had been brought by police who called on a Mrs Rose, who after giving her a bottle, asked her to pose as a genuine customer and purchase a half pint of gin for 1/-. It was taken away for analysis and found to be under strength. In his defence Pearse said it could have come about as a result of the gin cask it was stored in having been opened on the stoop for over a year. He was fined £1 with £1/12/0 costs.

*** THE circus was coming to town. The Messenger carried an advance notice that Lord John Sanger's circus was to visit Bromsgrove and Droitwich. Among a host of attractions it would feature Dick Turpin's ride to York and the death of Bonnie Black Bess 'on a scale never attempted before.' Also high on the bill was 'Cyclo' the Human Enigma who it was said had loins of steel. His act was to have a fully laden 40hp car drive over his body.

50 Years Ago - March 15, 1958.

A PLAN for a by-pass around Rubery was published by the county council. It comprised a short link road between Callowbrook Lane and New Road and would eventually form part of the new motorway project. New Road would carry south bound vehicles while those heading north would use Callowbrook Lane.

*** TARDEBIGGE church was suffering from the attention of livestock in one form or another, the vicar the Rev Underhill reported to the annual meeting. Cattle and sheep from neighbouring fields were getting into the churchyard and eating the flowers, trampling the grass and turning his lawn into a quagmire.

*** DROITWICH horse show, such a feature of summers past in the spa, had been wound up through lack of support. The organisers reported losses of £170 last year and £100 the previous year. In its heyday the show had attracted competitors from a wide area of the Midlands.

25 Years Ago - March 11, 1983.

BROMSGROVE'S 53 dustmen were upset at a proposal to privatise the town's refuse collection service. The district council was preparing to spend £2,000 on a feasibility study to see if it was viable. It was estimated that by privatising the collection a quarter of the £650,000 spent annually on the service could be saved.

*** FAIRFIELD'S five year old village hall could close unless villagers rallied round to support it and shoulder some of the responsibility of running it. An indication of the apathy towards the hall was highlighted by the fact not all the committee turned up.
