A ROW was brewing at Belbroughton over a proposal by Bromsgrove Rural District Council to extend the refuse tip in the now despoiled Dark Lane. The parish council had not been consulted and claimed it had been told tipping there would cease. Villagers said it was already a magnet for flies and vermin.
BROMSGROVE Cricket Club had built a glass extension to the front of the pavilion at its New Road ground. The building was in fact 63-years-old and had been moved to the present ground when the club had ceased playing at Parkside back in 1895. It had replaced a five by eight feet structure nicknamed The Crazy Shed, which had been ridiculously small for a club changing room. The club was taking the opportunity to install electricity in the pavilion allowing it in future to be heated and lit.
A QUICK look at some of the adverts in The Messenger revealed Halfords in High Street had their own make Roadster cycles for sale at £14/19/6 or £1 deposit and 38 weekly payments of 8/10. West Midland Clothing, in Worcester Road, was selling quality blazers for £4/19/6 and two-piece suits at 99/6. Meanwhile Norman Vine, in Worcester Street, was advertising the fact that it had more than 1,000 hats in its millinery department. And the Plaza cinema, in Church Street, was inviting youngsters to its Saturday morning Roy Rogers Club hosted by Auntie Maisie and Uncle Wally.
