CROSS COUNTRY FANS: Watching the cross country race from Whitford Lane.
A GROUP of people from the Hill Top and Fox Lane areas of Bromsgrove gather at a country gate, not to take in the idyllic view, but to watch a cross country race.
The picture, dating from about 1947, was taken in Whitford Lane opposite what was the old mill, seen in the background.
The gate led into fields belonging to Whitford Farm. The photo has been sent in by Roger Turton, from Sidemoor, who told us that his father, Jack, is on the extreme right.
Roger was a postman in Bromsgrove for 38 years before he retired. He said he has no other details, but thought many readers will know someone in the photo.
However, according to John Lammas, whose family owned the farm for many years, an athletics club from the Black Country used to stage a cross country race every spring, which started and ended in the field
Old pupils at Watt Close will have mixed memories of Sanders Walk, Whitford Lane and Breakback, which formed part of the school's gruelling cross country course. The onlookers are, from the left, ? Kirby, Roy Miller, Ronnie Richardson, Mr Banks, ? Wedgeberrow, George Mole and his daughter Ann, Beryl Turton and Bridget (Roger's mum and sister), Alice Turner, who lived in Whitford Lane, and her late daughter-in-law Margaret and Jack Turton.
