Time to meet the dream team

ON THE BALL: Crescent Rovers players from the mid-1950s.

A FOOTBALL team, that in its heyday was one of Bromsgrove's best, briefly takes the field again for our weekly glance at the past.

The players and officials of the extremely successful Crescent Rovers side in the mid-1950s are pictured outside their headquarters at the Hundred House pub in Stourbridge Road. The photo has been sent in by Ray Albutt, from Fairfield, whose father Albert founded the team. Originally many of the players came from or near Perryfields Crescent in Sidemoor, hence the name.

As can be seen by the trophies, it was a highly successful side with Ray going on to play for West Brom and other players signing for First Division clubs.

Ray said this particular season they won every competition they entered, except the county Junior Cup.

The players and officials are, back row, from the left, Barry Edwards, Bob Bennett (trainer), J Harris, A Horton, B Gower, W Clark, R Taylor, S Crane, B Peplow, J Winters, B Amess (both committee), and A Albutt (secretary/treasurer). Front, E Robinson (committee), D Callow, R Powell, R Albutt, I Bedford (captain), H Sivell, J Payne, R Amess (mascot) and B Dyer. There's a postscript to last week's Memory Lane photo of a group of people watching a cross country event which started in a field belonging to Whitford Farm.

John Lammas, who lived there then, rang from his Dorset home to say he recalled one year the Midland championship started in his field opposite Whitford Mill and the Tipton Harriers national runner Jack Holden was among the competitors.

John also reminded us that the field was, around this time, also Sidemoor United's home ground.
