25 Years Ago, April 15, 1983

BROMSGROVE publican Malcolm Giles raised a glass to toast himself after a double stroke of luck on the Grand National. Mr Giles, from the Queen's Head, Stoke Pound, had had a nice little bet' on the winner Corbiere. He had also won a sweepstake organised by a brewery to raise cash for the Save Aintree racecourse fund. His prize was a gleaming brand new £10,000 Land Rover.

THE last chapter in the sorry saga of the so called street of shame' - Newman Way in Rubery - had started. The bulldozers were this week moving in to demolish the squalid, empty flats and maisonettes which had suffered appalling vandalism. A private estate was set to be built on the site.

THE organisers of Bromsgrove music festival, which was set to start next week, had heeded the criticism of those who last year had suggested that future programmes should be widened to appeal to more people. Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band and Richard Baker were to star along with the Band of the Royal Marines.
