Popping out for market day
CROWD PLEASER: Market day in Bromsgrove in the early 1900s.
CROWD PLEASER: Market day in Bromsgrove in the early 1900s.

A BUSY day at Bromsgrove market is captured in this old photograph, which was taken sometime in the early 1900s.

It shows a crowd gathered around the stalls set out in Market Place at the lower end of High Street in front of the old Town Hall on the left.

To its right is the George Hotel and Nokes' furniture store.

The narrow space between is the course of the Spadesbourne Brook. On the opposite corner can be seen part of Appleby's ironmongrer's shop, which made the entrance to St John Street extremely narrow.

Market days of old used to bring a buzz to the town as hundreds of shoppers from outlying villages travelled to Bromsgrove for the day to shop.

The image of Bromsgrove as a traditional market town as depicted in this fine old photograph, kindly lent to us by Bob Richardson from Bromsgrove, is one which the district council is keen to perpetuate, if weekly street markets replace those in the present Market Hall, which will go when the site is developed.

It is interesting to note that the ancient area formerly known as Market Place' only disappeared fairly recently when the post office closed.
