FIREMEN from Bromsgrove were joined by colleagues from Redditch and Worcester in tackling a blaze in a 100-ton stack of timber at the Bromsgrove Railway and Wagon works at Aston Fields. Their task was made more difficult as the large pile of boards, retrieved from carriages which had gone in for repair, were so tightly packed together that it was almost impossible for the firemen's water jets to penetrate to the seat of the fire.
JEAN Moorhouse, 20, from Wychbold, beat 25 other lovelies when she was voted Droitwich's new carnival queen at the Spa's Winter Gardens. Jean was an accomplished pianist and was a bell ringer at Wychbold church, as well as being a member of Droitwich women's hockey team.
A CORRESPONDENT to The Messenger, signing himself Ex Patron', bemoaned the bad manners shown by staff at one of Bromsgrove's two cinemas saying he could well understand why the pictures were losing out to TV. He said he had been watching a musical when the end was cut short to show a fleeting glimpse of Buckingham Palace at the same time as a few bars of what he thought was the National Anthem was played. Staff then rushed in and began tipping up the seats in such haste he was fearful that the few customers there would be locked in the building.
