Bringing history to life

TV archaeologist Professor Mick Aston, from Time Team, visited Bromsgrove to give a fascinating talk to a packed hall at Avoncroft Museum of Buildings.

Last Thursday's event was arranged by members of the Dodderhill Parish Survey Project.

The professor used slides to explain how the Channel 4 programmes are made and who is involved, including the people behind the scenes.

Project co-ordinator, Chris Bowers said: "The 180-strong audience had many questions and after the talk they took the opportunity to be photographed with Mick.

"Mick Aston's popularity shows that he is arguably the greatest single contributor to public understanding of archaeology at this time, and a superb ambassador for the science."

"He was mobbed by a number of younger audience members and spent a lot of time with them. His popularity shows that he is arguably the greatest single contributor to public understanding of archaeology at this time, and a superb ambassador for the science. The talk's popularity was indicative of the interest shown in local history and archaeology," added Chris.

The historical research group has published two historical booklets - Dodderhill Parish Notes 1 & 2 and Robin Skerratt, who wrote Memories of Wychbold before the Motorway, is a member.

The Sharing Wychbold's Past project, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery, not only researches relevant documentary, building and archaeological evidence, but also encourages others to take an interest in local history. Derek Hurst is the archaeologist and historical advisor.
