| WORKHORSES: A pair of heavy horses, one of the attractions for visitors to Pepper Wood's open day this Sunday |
AN open day in woods near Fairfield is being held this Sunday, May 11.
This year's event at Pepper Wood, which has been looked after by a volunteer group for more than 25 years, will give townsfolk the chance to view the work being carried out and how it helps the surroundings.
There will be a pair of heavy horses pulling oak logs out of the forest, and volunteers will slice these into planks and posts, with specially adapted chainsaws. The group will be using tools which can be tried out by visitors.
A number of guided walks will also be held for anyone looking to find the best features of the wood, led by volunteers who have worked at Pepper Wood for many years.

Hugh Jenkins, chairman of the Pepper Wood Community Woodland, said: "Although the wood is always open, this is a great opportunity to see exactly what goes on here. Emphasis this year will be on the work that's done in the wood. Work it may be, but it's also great fun."
