A new era for housing

FIFTEEN new flats for young people in need of a place to stay, and backed by support and training facilities, are being planned for Bromsgrove.

West Mercia Housing Group is working with Bromsgrove District Council, Worcestershire County Council's Supporting People team and the Housing Corporation to build the £1.7 million Foyer development in New Road, near to the railway station.

The development will offer accommodation for youngsters aged 16 to 25, as well as training and resources to help them further their education, find work and become independent.

There are already more than 130 successful Foyers around the country.

Plans for the scheme go on display at Ladybird Lodge, in Finstall Road, Bromsgrove, so residents can look and give their views.

“Research has shown that there is an urgent need for this type of support for young adults in Bromsgrove."

Finalised plans will then be submitted to the district council and it is hoped work can start in January 2009 if they are approved.

"Research has shown that there is an urgent need for this type of support for young adults in Bromsgrove," said Pat Brandum, chief executive of West Mercia Housing Group.

"The building will include offices for management and support workers, facilities for individual and group education, including a life skills' training area and a high-quality ICT suite.

"The accommodation will have a mix of self-contained, one-bed flats and some smaller bedsit-style rooms with communal lounge areas.

"We are delighted to have been appointed to carry out the work by Bromsgrove District Council and look forward to working even more closely with it and Supporting People to deliver this much-needed facility."

Councillor Peter Whittaker (Con- Tardebigge) the district council's portfolio holder for housing, said: "Housing and helping young people in the Bromsgrove area, who may otherwise be faced with homelessness, is a priority for the district council.

"This new Foyer scheme will provide new homes with support facilities that will help people move on in to independent living."

The public consultation takes place on May 22 from 2-7pm.
