A tree-mendous idea

SCHOOLS in and around Bromsgrove are to be offered the chance to plant native trees and hedgerows - courtesy of the Woodland Trust's Tree For All campaign.

In all, more than 2,500 trees will be planted in Worcestershire this spring as part of the scheme, adding to about 160,000 planted across the UK. Schools will have a choice of packs from hedge tree species, copse species or seeds.

The campaign, which was launched in September 2004, is the largest children's tree planting initiative the UK has ever seen. It will result in more than 12 million trees being planted by one million children by 2009, inspiring today's youngsters to engage with nature and become environmental custodians of the future.

Paul Bunton, of the Woodland Trust, said: "Because of modern lifestyles, many children are growing up with little connection with their natural environment. Tree For All is about inspiring young people to become future guardians of the natural environment and to encourage people to become more in touch with nature, increasing their understanding and enjoyment of woodland."

The school children will help to create havens for thousands of species and woodland areas for future generations to enjoy. Not only will this give them the excitement of seeing their trees grow, but they will be able to plant the saplings in their school grounds or local areas."
