Philip Aubrey, former director of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, spoke to us at our April meeting on the subject of vegetable growing.
Philip has grown vegetables since he was very young and is delighted that so many people from all walks of life are now taking an interest in growing their own.
He took us through every stage of setting up a vegetable plot, from soil preparation, choice of seed, pest control to general care. He strongly advised that the gardener should only grow vegetables that his/her family like to eat and to think carefully about quantity and successive cropping. Our first group outing in 2008 took place on April 16 when we spent an evening at Wootten Grange Farm. Jean Tarmey showed us round her lovely NGS garden and treated us to tea and home-made cakes in her warm kitchen afterwards.
Our next meeting will take place today (Wednesday) when Celia Davis will be talking to us about insects in the garden - friend or foe. Our meetings are held in the village hall, Chaddesley Corbett at 7.30 for 8pm and guests are welcome. For details, please call Jean Smith on 01527 861437.
