A captivating aerial performance of music, fire-wielding, acrobatics and dare-doing kicked off a weekend of free arts, food, shopping and sports activity last night as the City’s ‘Birmingham Weekender’ began.

The festival, which runs from Friday through to Sunday 27th, offers a weekend of outdoor performance, art and entertainment, comprising of an awe-inspiring programme of events from hundreds of world-class West Midlands and international artists and companies.

The beguiling, unique ‘Maudits Sonnants’ is one such international addition to the festival line-up, brought to the city by France’s Transe Express troupe. Located in the City’s Centenary Square, with the recently redeveloped Library of Birmingham proving a suitably impressive backdrop, the performance sees a ‘Celestial Carillon’ raised high into the evening’s sky, dangling musicians, trapeze artists and other delights above the assembled crowds watching on in awe. A thoroughly impressive spectacle which was met with rapturous cheer from the public, and quite unlike anything you will have seen before, the performance, which lasted approximately 50 minutes, will be repeated Saturday evening at 8:30pm for those who missed it first time round.

The ‘Weekender’, organised by Birmingham Arts Partnership and produced by the Birmingham Hippodrome, will coincide with the impressive Grand Central development opening at Birmingham New Street Station, Style Birmingham Live and also the Rugby World Cup, which is being shown and celebrated at various outdoor screens and venues throughout the City.

A truly exciting and eclectic time to be heading to the Country’s second capital, those who are interested in participating in any of the above events, including Maudits Sonnants and the huge range of activities on offer during the ‘Birmingham Weekender’ can visit the festival’s official website by at www.birminhamweekender.com, or alternatively pick up a programme at the New Street Tourist Information Centre or Library of Birmingham itself.

The 'Birmingham Weekender' runs across the City of Birmingham from Friday 25th through to Sunday 27th September 2015.
