THE managing director of a West Midlands motor business has smashed his fundraising target before setting off on a sponsored cycle ride today.

Andrew Hockedy, 52, of Trust Group UK, which has Volkswagen dealerships in Wolverhampton, Stourbridge and Redditch, will be in the saddle to take part in the London to Paris Bike Ride.

He set himself a target of raising £1,600 for Action Medical Research, a national charity that saves and changes the lives of children through medical research, but has already hit £1,705, which means his personal fundraising for the charity is more than £7,000, thanks to his Hockedy Trilogy.

Previously, he raised a combined total of more than £5,400 by cycling the inaugural Warwick 100 and completing a Land's End to John O'Groats ride.

Mr Hockedy said: “My third and final ride is London to Paris and although under 300 miles it is still a challenge.

“With four days to complete it in and a mass finish under the Arc de Triomphe I am looking forward to testing myself again, as well as raising vital funds for this great charity, that really does put the money to such positive good use.”

Today's organised ride sets off from London and to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the start of the First World War, the route will take in a number of battle sites and cemeterie,s including Arras and the River Somme.

Mr Hockefy aims to keep his supporters entertained throughout the four-day event, with regular updates and blogs.

He added: “Right now the best medical minds in children’s hospitals and universities across the UK are waiting for the green light to start research that could lead to life-changing treatments for babies and children. They just need the funding.

"I sincerely hope that this challenge will go some way towards helping Action Medical Research.”
