WYRE Forest businesses joined together to raise £1,300 for a skin cancer charity as part of an annual netball tournament.

More than 70 players stood toe-to-toe in the recent inter-business charity event to raise money for Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Fighting Skin Cancer Fund.

The indoor contest, held at Stourport Sports Club, was organised by Kidderminster-based financial planners Prosser Knowles Associates and saw the team from Barclays Bank scooping the winning trophy.

The tournament featured 20 matches played over 10 minutes with the Barclays team overcoming Ormorod Rutter in a “tense” final. Semi-finalists included reigning champions mfg Solicitors and newcomers, Heart of Worcester College.

Siobhan Record, a financial planner at Prosser Knowles Associates and tournament organiser, said: “Our netball tournament has been a huge success again this year and I’d like to thank all of the businesses who took part and raised funds for a charity which is doing so much for people who suffer from cancer.

“It’s a fun event and everyone enjoyed playing again this year - although it does get a little more serious as teams see themselves creeping towards the final stages.

“I am already taking enquiries for next year’s tournament and we look forward to hosting the event for many more years to come.”

Mrs Record also thanked kind-hearted businesses who donated prizes for the raffle which took place after the tournament.

Other businesses involved in the event included Painters Solicitors, Richards Sandy Partnership, Thursfields Solicitors, Tosoh Corporation and a joint team from legal firm George Green and accountants Crowe Clarke Whitehall.

Becky Giddins, of Kidderminster, who has beaten cancer three times since being first diagnosed in 2007, attended the event and presented the trophy to the winners.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Fighting Skin Cancer Fund has so far raised more than £16,000. For more information about the fund visit qehb.org
