A MIDLANDS businessman is hoping local golfers will club together to help raise awareness of opportunities in the sport for disabled people.
Tony Dee, who runs window renovation firm, Ventrolla, has teamed up with the Disabled Golf Society and the English Blind Golf Association to stage a charity golf day on September 2 at Severn Meadows Golf Club in Bridgnorth.
The event is open to able-bodied and disabled players alike.
Mr Dee is looking for entrants from across the region and is offering free places for blind or disabled golfers and their helpers, while able-bodied golfers are being asked to pay to cover green fees and refreshments.
He said: “We want to create an event that encourages players of all ages and abilities to enjoy a relaxed round of golf together.
“There are plenty of opportunities available for disabled people to learn how to play golf and ways of accessing support with specialist equipment and coaching.
“We are taking registrations for our day up until July 16 and will try and pair able-bodied and disabled players together in teams, where possible.
“It should be tremendous fun and we look forward to hearing from people who want to get involved.”
The Disabled Golf Society promotes the game throughout England and offers a variety of services for members, including arranging tournaments, golfing breaks and providing equipment.
Blind golf is played by blind and partially-sighted players with the support of a sighted coach. The coach assists them in describing the shot and layout of the hole and also helps align the club head.
The English Blind Golf Association is a registered charity, with patrons including Sir Nick Faldo, Lee Westwood and golf commentator, Peter Alliss.
Ventrolla Staffs and Salop is a branch of Ventrolla servicing homes and businesses throughout Staffordshire and Shropshire, restoring traditional timber sash windows and doors on period properties.
To register for a place on the Ventrolla golf day, contact Mr Dee on 01543 419 421 or email tony.dee@ventrolla.co.uk
