AN enthusiastic community volunteer, who works with several organisations in Droitwich, has been awarded the Wychavon Diamond Jubilee Award, after being nominated by the town council.

John Cocker was nominated for the award for his work in helping to maintain Showell Pond, which is owned by Wychavon District Council, and for his role as site representative at the town council’s allotments site in Copcut Park.

Lynn Stevens, parks officer at the council, said: “John tidies up the pond, collects litter, clears weeds from the beach area, prunes shrubs and trees and generally keeps an eye on the whole area, reporting any issues to us. Including this last summer when the pond dried out completely for a time and locals were concerned regarding the welfare of the resident population of moorhens.

“He tackles the work with enthusiasm and diligence and we are grateful for all the work he puts in to keep the local environment to an extra good quality standard.”

The award was created to recognise unsung local heroes, and Councillor Richard Morris put his name forward.

He added: “John has given great service in maintaining Showell Pond and area, he has ensured that it is a beautiful area to visit and more importantly enjoyed by a variety of wildlife, we wholeheartedly thank him.’

Droitwich Town Council also issued a statement, adding: “It is unusual in this day and age to find volunteers that are willing to assist with matters that are within the remit of a local authority, so often people feel that ‘the council’ should provide. John has an understanding and love for his community and a willingness to support with his expertise which is outstanding and so willingly given.”
