A PROUD dad from Droitwich has had his chest waxed to show support for his daughter who has lost her hair through chemotherapy.
David Jukes had the idea for the charity chest wax after his 36-year-old daughter Zoe Bounds had to lose her hair as part of treatment for breast cancer.
He said: “I couldn’t shave my head, I’m pretty bald anyway. I just shaved off the little bit that I had when she went bald as a gesture, but my chest is quite hairy so there’s a lot of takers for that. It’s just something you’ve got to do. I thought about getting out of it at one point, then I thought if I can’t stand a bit of pain for a minute or two, how’s Zoe going to get on with her weeks and months of pain?”
The charity chest wax, which was raising money for Cancer Research UK took place at Physique Fitness in Droitwich, where generous beautician Charlotte Dandridge donated her fee for the waxing to the charity, while her partner Craig Burns also volunteered to have his chest waxed, while Matt Kingard from the gym even paid an extra £10 to pull off the first strip of wax.
Mr Jukes added: “Charlotte donated her fee for doing it to the charity, and her partner had his chest waxed too. He only had about four hairs on his chest so she surprised him and did one strip down his legs.
“There must have been 20-30 people watching, and passers-by. They were throwing money in the bucket and shouting abuse every time I squealed.”
Mr Jukes daughter Zoe, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she was just 17 and was given eight months to live. She survived that and it was only after she and her husband moved up to York, that she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she has already had one breast removed as part of her treatment, with her next operation due to take place in November. She also works with several support groups in Yorkshire and with Coppafeel’s Boobettes campaign which encourages young women to check for lumps in their breasts.
She watched the chest wax on Skype from her home in York.
Mr Jukes added: “I’m really proud of the way she’s dealt with it. It’s hard to sit there and watch her deal with it, but she never moans about it, credit to her. I’m really proud of her. You’ve got to be strong to put up with what she’s put up with.”
