TWO year nine students from Droitwich Spa High School were feeling their power last week after taking over control of the Worcestershire Council for Voluntary Youth Services for a day.

Kara Pugh and Harvey Coton were nominated to take over the reins of the WCVYS by their school’s council as part of the Children’s Commissioner’s National Takeover Day, which saw young people all over the country take charge of local organisations.

13-year-old Kara learned about the work of the youth organisation, and helped to plan its rebranding as well as giving her views on the website.

She said she had been warned by friends that she would be bored and wishing she was back at school, but she had really enjoyed herself.

Harvey looked at the organisation’s online presence, he said: “WCVYS needs to do more to raise its profile, not many people have heard of it and they needed to find new ways of communicating.”

The two also got to enjoy a pizza lunch with the staff.

Phil Street, manager of WCVYS, added: “It’s great to get the young people’s perspective on our work, we’ve definitely learned a lot from them running our organisation for the day.”
