A FIREFIGHTER from Droitwich Fire Station has been honoured at an annual medals and awards ceremony for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, for his humane behaviour.

Firefighter Peter Doran was presented with Royal Humane Society Commendation for actions which took place in March of 2013 when he was visiting friends and family in Glasgow.

Mr Doran was having a meal out at a hotel restaurant, when a man at the next table suffered a heart attack and collapsed in front of him.

Mr Doran acted quickly, administering first aid to the man before giving him CPR for the next 15 minutes before paramedics arrived, successfully revived the man and taking him to hospital.

Mr Doran lost the man’s pulse on two separate occasions during the 15 minutes, but managed to restart his heart before the paramedics arrived.

The hotel’s duty supervisor, who assisted Mr Doran to keep the man’s airway open, said that he believed the man would not have survived, if not for Mr Doran’s efforts, something which the Ambulance Service confirmed.

As a result of his actions, Mr Doran was awarded the chief fire officer’s Letter of Congratulations last year, before being put forward by the service for a royal humane society award this year.

CFO Mark Yates, who helped to present the awards, said: “The event is one of the highlights of the service’s calendar. Without the exceptional talents and commitment of our staff, there wouldn’t be the high quality Fire and Rescue Service that we enjoy in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

“I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the invaluable, and often unrecognised, support our staff receive from their families and loved ones.”

Firefighter Doran was one of several people to receive awards at the ceremony at Hereford’s town hall, but the only one to receive the Royal Humane Society Commendation, which is awarded by the Royal Humane Society, for praiseworthy actions by citizens of the United Kingdom.
