A PLANNING application for a third major housing development just outside Droitwich has been withdrawn only days before it was due to go in front of the Wychavon Planning Committee.

The proposed development, which was put forward by UK Land and Development, would have seen 163 houses being built on a greenfield site off Chawson Lane to the south of Droitwich in the parish of Salwarpe.

Salwarpe Parish Council had already objected to the development, with chairman Philip Oakley saying: “Our main objection is the amount of housing that’s being pushed to the south of Droitwich. We’ve already got the Copcut development, there’s the Yew Tree one on the other side of the A38, they’re in effect two small support dormitory towns. The problem with this one at Chawson is it links Copcut and Chawson to Salwarpe. We’ve got one continuous development, and it would just totally ruin Salwarpe, it’s totally wrong. The road network isn’t sustainable, the amount of traffic is bad already, and this would make the whole situation a lot worse. You’ve got almost a 10 per cent increase in the number of residents in Droitwich. The bypass was always going to be the southern boundary of Droitwich. but it will be in Martin Hussingtree before you know it. Without those other developments having started people don’t know what’s going to hit them.”

Droitwich town councillors had also objected to the development and both had submitted comments to Wychavon District Council.
