ONE of Worcestershire's largest village fetes, which attracts thousands of visitors each year, takes place at Salwarpe, near Droitwich on Saturday afternoon.

The event raises money to maintain the ancient churches at Salwarpe and neighbouring Martin Hussingtree and is traditionally preceded by an hour long peal of church bells.

This year three new attractions will be joining the perennial favourites. Worcester Ukelele Band is making its debut with foot-tapping music, dog trainer Pauline Whittaker is demonstrating walking-to-heel to music and the 45-strong Droitwich Community Choir is also appearing for the first time.

Music is very much in evidence with two performances by West Mercia Police Brass Band and while being entertained adults have the chance to roll the dice for a Volvo, to bid in a silent auction, to scour the bric-a-brac marquee for bargains or admire the displays of quilts, flowers and local history in the church then the classic car display at Salwarpe Village Hall before popping in for a WI tea. For children attractions range from pony rides by Party Ponies, animals from Gloverspiece Mini Farm to pet and plenty of games from a coconut shy to beat the goalie and a bouncy castle.

Sports Partnership Hereford & Worcester is organising field games for children, who need to register on arrival, and all will receive a certificate and prize for entering. Plus there’s a barbecue, Churchfields Icecream (made on the farm) a cake and home made/garden produce stall, a cider tent, tombolas and a grand raffle to win an Apple iPad Mini.

The fete, at Churchfields Farm, Salwarp, will be opened at 2pm by Rev Beverley Jameson, following the hour long bell peal after a fanfare from the police band. Entry to the fete is £1 with parking and children free.
