TOWNSFOLK of all ages showed community spirit is alive and well in Droitwich Spa as parties and picnics were held over the jubilee weekend.

The town’s school children got in the spirit of the occasions with a host of events.

Youngsters from St Peter’s First School, St Peter’s Church Lane, celebrated the Queen’s 60th year on the throne by holding a picnic on Friday, June 1. Decorated in red, white and blue, pupils enjoyed the historic occasion with some creative costumes.

The children have also enjoyed learning all about the history of the Queen’s reign and the Royal family.

Headteacher Tracey O’Keeffe-Pullen said: "Despite the unpredictable weather the children have enjoyed celebrating this wonderful occasion. It is always lovely to see so many families come along to support the children and school events."

Hanbury First School, School Road, Hanbury, celebrated with an all-day party for pupils, parents and staff on Thursday, May 31.

Visitors dressed in fashion covering the Queen’s reign and enjoyed a disco, sweet shop and afternoon tea.

Andrew Payne, headteacher, said: “Everyone had a fantastic day celebrating this momentous occasion; it was a wonderful way for the children to learn about modern history.”

Toddlers at Droitwich’s Brighteyes Day Nursery, Old Coach Road, were joined by parents for a garden tea party on Friday, June 1.

However, it wasn’t just the younger generation who showed the Great British spirit.

Patriotic Westmead Care Home resident Peggy Smith dressing up as Her Majesty today.

The 88-year-old was so enthralled with a tiara being displayed by activities leader Maureen Morse to promote the home’s jubilee garden party that she decided she would love to look the part.

Activities leader Maureen Morse said: “Peggy saw the tiara and said ‘it’s so beautiful’, so she wore it with great pride, along with some very regal gloves and a stunning dress.”

The home’s manager Sue Stokes said: “Our residents are so fond of The Queen so we really pulled out all the stops to make sure this was a very special day for them look back on.”

Members of a town Slimming World group also joined in with the celebrations with a charity party yesterday.

Gaynor Hale, who runs the group at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, Worcester Road, said: “Two of my members, Charli Stallard and Julia Saunders, have been raising money for Breast Cancer Care. They have raised £1,400 through various sponsored walks and events so this seemed a great opportunity to celebrate their achievements whilst celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.” To donate to the charity visit justgiving.com/charliestallard
