Town sports clubs team up to launch new community facility plans
2:10pm Tuesday 26th June 2012 in Droitwich News
TWO vital community sports clubs have teamed up to launch plans to build a major new facility in the town.
Droitwich Spa Cricket Club and Droitwich Spa Boys and Girls Football Club, which are both based at St Peter’s Fields, off The Holloway, have taken the first steps towards building a new clubhouse and pavilion complex.
The scheme would see the current building, which is more than 40 years old, replaced with a modern, attractive and more secure multi-purpose facility.
It is hoped the new site would be open all year and would be available for use by wider community groups, as well as the 175 members of the cricket club and more than 200 boys and girls from the football club that use the premises each Saturday during their season.
Although the ambitious project is only at the stage of having outline plans, the two clubs, in conjunction with Droitwich (St Peter’s Fields) Sports Association, have already engaged with the community in gaining views on a change of building.
The nearby St Peter’s Church, the clubs’ own members and the trustees of St Peter’s Fields have been consulted and a presentation to Droitwich Spa Town Council is planned in the coming weeks.
Project leader, Mark Chalmers, said: “The small group of volunteers who are driving the project now have the mammoth task of raising the necessary funds, firstly to meet the cost of the formal planning stage and later for building the new facility. In today’s economic climate this will by no means be easy.”
People in the town will now be able to discuss the plans during a special event to highlight the project.
Residents are being invited to view the plans and discuss the scheme on Saturday, July 7. People can go to the cricket club between 2 and 4pm to find out more. The cricket club’s first and third teams will be playing at home on that day and a fully licensed bar will also be open to visitors.
